Grow Song of The Evertree Wiki

Fish are aquatic creatures found throughout Alaria and on World Seeds in Grow: Song of the Evertree. The Apprentice can catch these creatures using the Fishing Rod and place them in various Nature Reserves or sell them to Fisherkin in Where-Ever. Fish are always passive but skittish, and will always flee from the Apprentice when they get too close in the water.

    Catching Fish

Before the Apprentice can catch fish, they have to visit Where-Ever and collect a Fishing Rod, equip it and learn how to fish from Fisherkin, the fishing Everkin. This is not a missable part of the game. Once the Apprentice has a Fishing Rod equipped, press the button to begin fishing (Left click on Mouse or X on Controller) or hold the same button to aim where to drop the hook. The Apprentice will swing the rod and the bobber will land on the water near where it was aimed (or several yards in front of the Apprentice if they didn't aim). Any nearby Fish may be startled and flee away from where the bobber landed. At this point, the Apprentice must wait for a Fish to approach the bobber and strike the hook, however, an impatient Apprentice can move the bobber using the directional keys usually used for movement (Left Control Stick on PC Controller or WASD on keyboard for PC). Moving the bobber too quickly will startle the Fish, but slow, small movements can help guide the bobber towards a specific Fish.

Once the Fish strikes the hook, an arrow will appear above them, either red or green. The Apprentice needs to move the directional controls in the direction the arrow points to turn it green. The longer the Apprentice keeps the arrow green, the faster the Fish will be reeled in and caught - fail to keep it green, and the Fish will get away. Once the Fish has been reeled in, the Apprentice will pick it up and hold it, and be given the option to Throw the Fish back, Place the Fish (as in, on the ground), or Put the Fish into the Backpack, storing it in inventory for later. Regardless of the decision made at this point, the Apprentice will be given credit for catching the Fish as soon as it is in their hands.

    Catching Special Items

In some pools of water, glowing "hotspots" of light can be seen (and heard, as they make a jingling noise). These hotspots contain random (but usually rare) items, such as Clothing, Keys or Upgrades for Buildings. The Apprentice can catch these items the same way as Fish, but instead of waiting for the Fish to come close, the Apprentice will need to navigate the bobber into the middle of the hotspot, where it will trigger the Fishing minigame.

    Fish Uses

Aside from Goals, there are really only two uses for Fish: selling to Fisherkin for EverKoins or placing into a Nature Reserve. Fish can only be viewed or placed into Nature Reserve by interacting with the Manage Reserve menu at the specific Nature Reserve. Select Manage Fish, and choose which Fish to place in that Nature Reserve. They will then not only appear in the pond in that Nature Reserve, but the Apprentice can even catch them if desired.

    Fish Species

Each Fish species' appearance is uniquely generated based on the Biome they spawn in, but still utilizing a limited number of semi-randomized body parts per biome. It is possible to track different species of Fish on a single world by noting morphological differences, such as colouration and different fins, head and body styles.

The charts below show different body parts that are available to be mixed and matched (please note that the names used come from internal game files and do not appear in the game itself). A "Stripey" body might be paired with a "LumpHead" head and "CrescentMoon" fins. The same world could have a separate critter species with an identical combination of Stripey/LumpHead/CrescentMoon, but a different colour pattern.

Note that the colours are used to show the differences of colour patterns that can appear on a single body part. Actual colour palettes are based on Biome settings for that World.

    Notes

    • To advance the Fish progress in a world, you must catch a set number of different types of Fish. You do not have to keep them. Catching the Fish while in a Cave on that World will trigger the "first time caught" message, but will NOT count towards the World's goal counters.
